Exercise Right Month

Exercise Right Month (previously Exercise Right Week) is an annual awareness initiative held in May each year. Since its inception in 2014, this initiative has aimed to highlight the benefits of exercise for your health and well-being, and to help you understand where to get the right advice for your individual needs.

The initiative is brought to you by Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA). ESSA is the nation’s leading voice on exercise and sports science, governing and representing approximately 10,000 degree-qualified professionals who support Australians to reach their health and performance goals.

Get involved by committing to daily intentional exercise, hosting or attending an event, downloading your free digital toolkit and submitting your Who Moves You? story. Join us this May.

Exercise Right Week 2024  |  20 – 26 May 2024

In 2024, the theme for Exercise Right Week was “Just Move”! Everyday Australians were encouraged to get involved by participating in daily movement, finding exercise that felt good for them and chatting to their local exercise professional about how to move right for their body!

Exercise Right Challenge 2024  |  1 – 30 May 2024

To celebrate 10 years of Exercise Right in 2024, we launched the Exercise Right Challenge and encouraged Aussies to just move for 30 Minutes, 30 Days in May. This challenge encouraged movement of any kind for just 30 minutes a day, from May 1st to May 30th.

Exercise Right Week 2023

The 2023 theme was ‘The Right Advice’, highlighting the importance of seeking individualised and tertiary-qualified advice for exercise, health, and sporting needs. The 7-day campaign featured daily themes, showcasing ESSA members’ diverse knowledge and skillset, including chronic conditions, strength training, sports, cardio training, women’s health, older Australians, and mental health.

Exercise Right Week 2022

The theme for 2022 was that ‘Exercise for the Right Reasons’. We aimed to shift the dialog around exercise away from weight loss and onto the physical, mental, and social health benefits of being active. We shared our top reasons to move, and included a range of free resources and expert advice to help you get moving safely.

The theme for 2021 was that ‘Exercise Changes Lives’. Through the power of exercise, you can take charge of your health, take charge of your well-being and take charge of your life! Exercise is for everyone, regardless of age, weight, background or health status. With the right advice for your individual needs, you can change your life.

Exercise Right Week 2020

The theme for 2020 was “Movement is Medicine“. We wanted to highlight how powerful exercise, physical activity and movement are for your physical and mental health. We also want to showcase that exercise is for everyone, regardless of age, weight, background or health status, and to help everyday Australians understand where they can get the right advice for their individual needs.

Exercise Right Week 2019

The theme for 2019 was “Active Ageing”. We wanted to highlight the fact that being physically active and staying fit helps Australians you to get the most out of life at every age. Despite these benefits of regular exercise, only 17.2% of those aged over 65 are meeting the physical activity guidelines. We wanted to change that.
